Why would God tell Abram to leave his family and friends? Couldn’t God bless Abram where he was? Why did Abram have to leave? Addressing this question is important because sometimes people want God to bless them, but they don’t want to leave their old places. And others who may have left their old places don’t understand why they are going though so much.
It was twenty-five years after the promise that Abraham received a son. Until that time, Abram went through tests and trials. Before Abram could receive the promise, he had to develop a new image of himself — being a father. And before he could get a new image of himself, he had to separate from his old familiar places with family, his friends, his surroundings.
God has a way of inviting us to experience something better, but it can require leaving old relationships and old familiar places. While many want something better, they are unwilling to leave the old. They are too comfortable and don’t want to change.
On the other hand, there are some who like Abram, leave the old places. They leave with a desire to please God. They leave with a promise of something better. They have God’s promise that if they leave the old place, God will bless them and use them to be a blessing. They move out into a place they do not know, nor have they ever been. They believe God is leading them.

It takes work to form a new image of ourselves. Once the image is on the inside, it will manifest on the outside. Therefore, get a new image of yourself. Imagine what it’s like to have the promise. Talk like you have the promise. Act like you have the promise. In the process of time, you’ll form a new image of yourself, and like Abraham, you’ll receive the promise. Overcome the old by leaving the old behind and replacing it with something new.
